Nutrients or Constituents of Food

There are two types of nutrition. Food constituents or nutrients are broadly classified into a list of two categories.

Macronutrients

Nutrients that our body needs in larger quantity. These are used as energy resource and provide material to build our building blocks or body structure. Though, the energy production or generated internal energy through these macronutrients depends on absorption and digestion efforts.

Macronutrients are:

  • Carbohydrates (Sugar, Starch, Fiber)
  • Protein
  • Fat (Saturated, Unsaturated)

Micronutrients

Nutrients that our body needs in small quantity, but are important for smooth and efficient body processes. They influence some body systems, maintaining the co-ordination between various body processes. Not only this, they also ensure the proper consumption of energy and promotes self defense.

Micronutrients are:

  • Vitamins (Fat soluble, Water soluble)
  • Minerals (Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Potassium, Sodium, Copper, Manganese, Chromium, Cobalt, Nickel, Phosphorus, Zinc, Iodine, Selenium, Chloride, Molybdenum, Fluoride, Sulpher, Selenium)
  • Trace elements

Importance of Nutrients

Food is an incomplete term without macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients, which supports health and life. They are stored in form of energy, fat and muscle mass, and that’s why a person can survive for 2-8 weeks without taking food. Poor nutrition or malnutrition results in less productivity or poor performance, whereas good nutrition promotes growth and development.

Where nutrition can save one from various chronic diseases, lack of them or poor diet can show its adverse impact on health too. It may cause one suffer from:

  • Deficiency diseases: kwashiorkor and scurvy
  • Unhealthy conditions: metabolic syndrome and obesity
  • Common systemic chronic diseases: diabetes, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular
