Protein Use in 5 Blood Functions: Formation, Transport, Clotting, Defense and Distribution

Do you know that the use of protein is not contracted till growth, formation, and development; it is also an active contributor to the functions of blood cells like protection, transportation, and regulation. Know below how protein helps blood cells in vessels and what are those major 5 blood functions in which the participation of proteins can't be ignored.

Formation of Blood Cells and Transportation of Oxygen

Protein helps in the formation and functioning of our blood cells. The red blood cells (RBCs) take oxygen to lungs or gills and release the oxygen molecules in tissues. The flexibility, deformability, and durability of these red blood cells depend on proteins. The membranes of these cells are made of lipids and proteins. The transportation responsibility of 98% of oxygen remains on red blood cell protein. Rest 2% of oxygen dissolves in blood plasma so is carried by them.

3 Types of proteins that Help Blood Cells in Transport

Importantly, there are three types of proteins in plasma which play an important role in transportation.

Albumins Proteins help many substances in binding with plasma and dissolving. These way proteins play a vital role in plasma transportation of hormones, drugs and fatty acids.

Globulins Proteins helps in lipid transport. They carry fats to various cells so that the fat can be used for hormonal functions, manufacturing of steroid hormones, energy metabolism, making of cell membranes and reconstruction of the membrane. They do not let cholesterol invade and settle in arteries walls. But they favor the cholesterol deposition in arterial walls too and so play a vital role in cholesterol regulation and diseases related to heart and blood vessels.

Fibrinogen Proteins helps in framework formation of blood clot, playing key role in blood coagulation.

Protein Use in pH Balance

Proteins helps in maintaining the stable pH and keep the blood little basic. For this process, proteins behave as weak bases and bind with those H+ ions which are in excess. This way they remove extra H+ from blood, keeping them slightly basic.

The blood cell contains some protein on its surface too. Other than clotting and transport, proteins play their role in defense as well.

Distribution of Water

Plasma proteins also manage the water distribution between blood cells and tissues.

Role of Protein in Clotting

Though plasma is mainly made of water, yet it also contains different proteins. The moment blood spills, plasma protein starts its work and clumps with some cells, making a clot. The plasma proteins cause blood coagulation by their specific ways of interactions. Thus, protein helps the body to response while injuries and aids controlling the blood loss and protecting from viruses.

If you are ignoring protein taking it as a nutrient which is important for bodybuilders only, change your perception as this is a vital element of any nutritious diet.
