When Navratri Day 6 is Celebrated?

It is celebrated four times a year on Shukla Shashti:

  • On Ashwin Shukla Shashti during Sharadiya Navratri (Maha Navratri)
  • On Chaitra Shukla Shashti during Vasant Navratri
  • On Ashadha Shukla Shashti during Gayatri Navratri
  • On Magha Shukla Shashti during Magha Navratri

Significance of Katyayani Puja

Goddess Katyayani is believed to be the incarnation of Durga. Devi Katyayani is revered as a warrior goddess who exhibits courage.

She is also seen as one of those incarnations of Parvati which are the most violent.

The Katyayani worshippers also believe that their goddess governs the planet Brihaspati.

Origin

Once an Asura (Demon) named Mahishasur spread tremendous terror among all the righteous people. When no one was able to cope up with him, Devi Durga took one of her most furious Avatar (incarnation) to destroy that demon.

Her this fearful form got famous with the name “Katyayani” and from then the devotees started worshipping her as Goddess Katyayani too as she played the savior for them.

Goddess Parvati is seen as a very soft-hearted mother who is revered as the Goddess of Anna (grain) and thus also known as Annapurna. But after this incident, people worship their Maa Parvati as a violent Worrier Goddess as well.

Nomenclature

As per the ancient stories in religious Hindu texts, Devi Katyayani is a form of Goddess Parvati, who took birth in Sage Katya’s home. Thus she is believed to be named on the name of her father Shri Katya.

Depiction of Katyayani

Katyayani goddess is depicted with four hands and on her Vahan (vehicle) lion. Her two left hands hold a sword and lotus flower. The right two hands of Katyayani Devi rest in Abhaya Mudra (pose of blessing with fearlessness) and Varada Mudra (pose of giving blessings).

Although she likes roses, yet red colored flowers are dear to her.
